What are adhesive tapes?
Adhesive tapes comprise of a pressure sensitive or ‘sticky’ adhesive that is coated to a carrier film or scrim, often a thin and light strip of paper, tissue, metalised foil, cloth, or plastic film and can be both single, or double sided.
Self-adhesive tapes bond quickly to substrates or surfaces, as only light pressure is needed for the bond to form – for example, with pressure from a finger – and thus, there is no waiting for heat or water solvents to be activated. The result: tape adhesives are incredibly easy to work with, versatile, and assembly times can be dramatically reduced.
Unlike mechanical fasteners, tape adhesives do not rattle or vibrate, and so help to reduce noise. They also distribute stress over a larger area – with stress not focused on a single point, as with rivets – making the adhesive bond more resistant to stresses. The elimination of visible fasteners also helps to improve aesthetics.
Tape adhesives offer a cost advantage over direct gluing, with investment in hot melt equipment unnecessary.
